Book Blogging Challenge Day 6: Shopping for Books

I discovered April’s 15 Day Book Blogger Challenge at Good Books and Good Wine. Each day has a different prompt, though anyone can jump in at any time. It’s a great way to get to know each other as well as explore different topics that I might not have touched on. The 15 different challenges are:

Today’s Challenge: Describe how you shop for books.

Okay, I swear I’m not trying to brag, but I haven’t really shopped for books persay in a while. I enter tons of giveaways on Librarything and Goodreads, which generally creates quite the queue of books that need to be read. Then combined with BEA, I seriously am almost stressed with trying to get through all the books in a timely manner. I am also profoundly cheap when it comes to certain things. Between books I can obtain for free, either by borrowing  from friends or from the library, I don’t tend to buy that many books. That said, there are certain qualities that attract me to certain books.

I love covers. Covers definitely help attract me to the book in the first place. Then comes the titles…some are super trendy titles, others are intriguing, and there are other that are halfway to being lame. While I read practically every genre, there are some genres I prefer over others. I love historical fiction and fantasy. I’m learning to like more science fiction and I can read quite a good amount of nonfiction if I’m in the right mood. Horror is not really my thing and the whole paranormal thing is wearing thin on me.

Of course, some amount of buzz definitely influences me. There are those books that people rave about that I feel like would be a good choice for my next book. Then you have those books that are a part of a series or written by a certain author that then influences me to want to read a book. I don’t think the way I shop is necessarily all that different from anyone else. Generally though, if I can’t borrow or rent the book for free, then I’ll actually buy a book. I want to read a book for free first if possible to know if it’s worth buying any of the others by a certain author/series.

  1. Yep, covers and buzz are my 2 worst enemies, because frankly I have too many reads lined up through to October already and not that much space on the bookshelf! My favorite way of choosing a new book has to be goodreads. 🙂
