Feature and Follow (1): How I Handle Books I Don’t Like

Increase Blog Followers

Feature & Follow is a meme hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. Each week they pick a blog to feature and the rest of us follow and participate.

Today’s question: How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

It really depends on how I’ve received it. If it is a book that I picked up myself, I might abandon, or ‘did not finish’ (DNF). I generally don’t like doing that because I want to make sure that I know the whole story when I inevitably write a review. I particularly power through if I received it as a review copy. While I love it when I actually enjoy a review copy, sometimes I don’t. And I entered into an agreement with the publisher, publicist, author, or whoever that I would read this book that I received for free and I want to make sure it’s as complete of a review as possible. That sometimes leads to some time that could be better spent, but if I didn’t like that obligation, I wouldn’t accept review copies. I wish I was daring enough to abandon any book that I don’t enjoy like some people. It’d probably be a lot more enjoyable. I’m just one of those people who can set rigid rules for myself.

How do you follow Playing Jokers?

Any way you want. I prefer following blogs through Bloglovin, but everyone’s different. I have a quick way to ‘like’ my blog through Facebook on the side bar, as well as a few of the other places you could choose from. 🙂

  1. Usually I will give a book 50-100 pages before I DNF if I’m not enjoying it. I used to power through but I no longer have the time and it turned reading into a chore. There are too many books on my tbr pile for me to feel guilty and I’m picky about what I read, so only have 1 DNF so far!
